Gesundheit: Good health is a laughing matter

I am passionate about caring holistically for the individual and their family.  By providing an attentive ear and time to listen, examine, explain and plan management, be it medical or surgical, I wish to achieve the best outcome for you.

I completed my medical studies at Oxford.  After five years globetrotting as a GP and then general surgeon, I trained as an ENT surgeon in England and Brisbane.  I am a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, Royal College of Surgeons of England and the Royal College of Edinburgh.  I have practiced in St Leonards since 1997.

I am specifically interested, experienced, and skilled in the care of general children’s and adult ENT for recurrent sinusitis, nasal obstruction, snoring, sleep apnoea, nasal polyps, nose bleeds, tonsils and voice.  These may require medical or surgical treatment.

I am the past Chair of the Mater Medical Staff Association (Sydney) and past Chair of the Division of ENT at both the Mater and Hunters Hill Hospitals.   I am a founder, as well as, past board member of both the Laryngology Society of Australasia (LSANZ) and the Australian Society for Performing Arts Healthcare (ASPAH).  I am a past President of the Australian Voice Association (AVA).

Voice Connection: Multidisciplinary Voice Clinic

I strongly believe that vocal problems are a result of a combination of medical, vocal skill and usage as well as, at times, emotional issues. In 1998 I set up a unique multidisciplinary voice clinic (Voice Connection) in Australia with Karin Isman (Speech Pathologist) and Jan Cullis (Counsellor/Performance coach). Rosie Stern (Speech Pathologist), Freya Smith (Psychologist) and Justin Doran (Psychologist) have joined our team. Together we assess and examine people with vocal difficulties. This includes using a fine fibreoptic telescope (laryngoscopy and stroboscopy) through the nose in order to see and record the voice box during speech or singing. You will be able to take a video recording home with you. As a team we are able to create a management plan tailored to your individual needs to enable you to regain your true voice. We look after many people from mothers, teachers, lectures, lawyers, business people as well as all levels of performers and singers from the stage and screen. For a very small number this involves microsurgery (microlaryngoscopy) for treatment of vocal fold cyst, polyp, papillomata (Laser) or vocal fold paralysis. Vocal nodules generally require speech therapy rather than surgery for optimal treatment.
